The Sign

My four-year-old granddaughter, Kenedy Lane, gave me a wooden wall sign for Christmas. You know the ones that are so popular and trendy right now? You can find them with so many different sayings, and lots of times you are drawn to it because it sums up something in your life. When I received my wall plaque, I was full of joy in getting a gift just from Keny. I hugged her and made big of her like any gramma would do. Of course, I also realized she was too young to read, and I knew it might have been picked out by one of her parents. That didn’t matter to me. I still loved it. I hung it on the wall in my dining room. That was over a year ago. Today, I looked at that sign that has been hanging there all this time, and its message came at me like a gust of wind. As I let the words play over and over in my mind, I was sure that even though Keny might not have picked it out, it was a message that came through her directly to me. It shifted my perspective of this gift immediately. Lessons we can learn from kids are priceless. I knew I needed to question the meaning on this sign and bring its suggestion into my daily life. My sign read, “Leave a little sparkle where you go.”

I checked the word “sparkle” in the American Heritage Dictionary and found the meaning is to give off a flash of light, to shine, to set in motion and rouse to action. Wow! When we enter into the personal space or life of a family member, a friend, an acquaintance or even a stranger, our sparkle could just be the spark they needed to add a glittering quality to their life. Try to reflect or give off a flash of light or a flash of hope, or encouragement and support where you go. Shine on friends!

Note: I received a second wall sign with the exact saying sometime later from my brother Kirby and his wife Carol. Ok I get it!
