THE DALAI LAMA

BY SUE POWELL

My youngest son, Mason, suggested that I read about the Dalai Lama. Mason was often talking about him and seemed to be a fan of much of the Dalai Lama’s ideas and practices. I, on the other hand, knew nothing about what his principles were. “Ok,” I thought, “I’ll check it out.” At present time, this Tibetan religious leader is number 14. Researching him I found that he is spiritual and has spent his life committed to benefiting humanity. What I read seemed to be very helpful to me in my personal life, and who doesn’t want to enjoy the company of humans who have the ability to love and show compassion?

When I was asked to blog for “Sue’s Circle” for the CPWLF, I was happy to do so, but at the same time, I worried if I would know what to say, especially to people dealing with some pretty rough situations. After considering this undertaking, I came to the conclusion that there were things that I could pass on and share with all of you. This is one of them.

“We must look at any given situation or problem from the front and from the back, from the sides, and from the top and the bottom – so from at least six different angles. This allows us to take a more complete and holistic view of reality and, if we do, our response will be more constructive. ”

                     –His Holiness, the Dalai Lama

I believe when he uses the word holistic, that he meant to raise the importance of the treatment of the whole person, including their mental and emotional health. Twenty some years ago, I was diagnosed with cancer. Sure, I had surgery, radiation, chemo, but I can honestly tell you that it was the prayers, love, support, and kindness that cured me. Not my family nor my friends, not even my acquaintances left me feeling alone. I am so thankful for that and because I know first-hand how powerful caring can be, I am making a plea for each one of us to reach out to these families. Your support will engage the whole world in a movement of love and kindness.
