THE STORM

BY SUE POWELL

As the images of Dorian were aired a few weeks ago on television, we all felt almost numb.  Loss of life, homes flattened, families’ hopes and dreams at a halt. So many people needing prayers and support from anyone who would be willing to help. These pictures are so vivid and put on display exactly what can happen in an instant to a community. These scenes prompt many of us to spring into action.

I wondered what the pictures of the inside of a family would look like if tragedy struck them as quickly as a hurricane strikes. Many similarities stand out. These families would be enduring the possibility of the loss of life, an interruption of their household as they knew it, future plans put on hold, and sadness like never felt before. Close your eyes and just imagine what a bad storm could do to a family’s life. There are no pictures.  We are not shown the pain and fear going on in the lives of these families. Focus on how gut-wrenching it would look if there were. It’s time for each of us to spring into action.

Our words as helpful, and as powerful as they are, it’s only when these words and our intentions cause change that we claim the power to make a difference. Doing what we are able to, when we are able, in any way we are able.  That is all that’s required.

Over twenty years ago, I was battling cancer.  I can still remember the things that my friends did to help me out. I can’t remember what I had for dinner last night, but I do remember the kindness I received twenty years ago. They sent cards, called me on the phone, offered to drive my youngest to nursery school, and fixed meals. These acts of kindness gave me the boost to weather my storm.

Let’s join the CPWLF, supporting the players and their families, with a little act of kindness.
